Abstract
The paper presents an original take on the extensive literature dealing with the various assessment
of economic departments, economists, and economic journals. The author analyses
three representative academic journals from 1999 to 2002 for similarities and differences between
the thematic structures of papers by „Czech“ and „European“ economists. The journals are
analyzed according to the Journal of Economic Literature Classification System (JEL) and are
limited to Czech and European contributors, this according to the institutional affiliation of the
authors as stated in the journals. The results suggest that Czech academic economics is more
concerned with macroeconomics or economic doctrine and methodology than microeconomics and
labor markets. Though this may seem unusual, the author believes the results primarily reflect
the phenomena of economic transition in the Czech Republic .
