The State of Economic Research in Slovakia (in Slovak)

Ciaian, Pavel; Pokrivcak, Jan

Year: 2005   Volume: 55   Issue: 11 -12   Pages: 546-562

Abstract: This paper evaluates economic universities and research institutes in Slovakia with respect to research output. The quality of a given university or research institute is measured by the stock approach, i.e., current staff publication activity as recorded in the SSCI and EconLit databases. Our results show that no significant transformation of university economic research has occurred in Slovakia since the end of communism. In fact, the organization of academic research in Slovakia retains its communist-era features wherein research is largely monopolized by central research institutes with universities engaged mainly in education. Sixty-three percent of the total research output in Slovakia in the 1990?s was published in domestic journals, indicating low international competitiveness.
